Acupuncture FAQs

What is the first appointment like?

The first appointment is 90 minutes. We will sit and talk over your condition and health history. After that I will assess your tongue, pulse, abdomen and acupuncture channels to figure out what treatment is best for you. I have a very gentle needling style, and I tailor the treatment to you and your needs. If it is appropriate, I may do other adjunctive therapies, such as cupping, gua sha or moxa.

Once the needles are in, you will relax for about half an hour to forty minutes.

How often do I need to get treatment?

Typically, appointments are scheduled weekly for a number of weeks to get your body to shift into a new state of health. Then once every season, or 4-6 weeks is recommended but not required for a general health tune up. Actually, the ideal way to treat, is when you are healthy, before you get sick, so you don’t get sick!

How big are the needles?

They are very small. The smallest ones I use are thinner than the width of a human hair. The largest needles are still much, much, thinner than a standard hypodermic needle used for injections.

Does it hurt?

When the needles go in there is sometimes a quick pinch then afterwards there is often tingling, warmth, heaviness, or a pleasant achiness near the point. We call this Qi or energy. Usually, people feel pretty relaxed.

What should I wear?

Wear loose and comfortable clothing. I will need access to your arms and legs from the elbows and knees down, so please plan accordingly!
